Hospice care is one of the most misunderstood and emotionally loaded aspects of caregiving- but it doesn’t have to be. In this episode of The Sahara Podcast, we’re honored to be joined by Dr. Yusuf Ruhullah from Pilsen Medical Clinic and Associates, who brings years of experience and deep compassion to the conversation around end-of-life care.
Together, we explore what hospice really is, how to know when it’s time, and how families can embrace this phase with love, presence, and peace.
Dr. Ruhullah defines hospice as a shift in focus—from aggressive treatments to quality of life, pain relief, and emotional support. It is care provided when a patient is no longer seeking a cure, but still deserves dignity, comfort, and meaningful time with loved ones.
He explains that hospice can happen at home, in a facility, or even in hospitals—and is guided by a holistic team of medical, emotional, and spiritual caregivers.
One of the hardest parts of the hospice journey is starting the conversation. Dr. Ruhullah shares practical ways to speak from the heart:
- Begin with listening
- Emphasize quality of life
- Use words that focus on comfort and love
- Be honest, but gentle
He reminds caregivers: “Create meaningful experiences. Caregivers should listen, participate, communicate, and focus on what the client wants to do (with permission of family).”
